Cortisol's effect on brain functions-
Or in other words: adrenal hormones - how they affect mental and functional abilities.
There is a hormonal course of response to stress that begins in two glands in the brain: the hypothalamus and the pituitary gland, and ends in the adrenal gland, which causes the secretion of the hormone cortisol. The phrase "adrenaline surged" refers to stressful situations that can cause extreme emotional reactions such as anger and anxiety. Less well known, but no less significant, is the concept of "rising cortisol" which affects the body as a response to stress by increasing the intensity of muscular reactions, ability to move, releasing sugars into the blood, increasing heart rate, speeding up breathing and oxygen supply, suppressing inflammatory reactions and much more. When a person is in a state of continuous pressure, known colloquially as "stress", there are disruptions in the production of cortisol in the adrenal gland - in the first stage cortisol levels rise and when the stress does not stop, the adrenal gland and other systems in the body weaken and with them the ability stabilize cortisol levels. Stress can be caused as a result of an exam period, social stress, the burden of suppliers and pressures at work, multiple tasks in the household function, a persistent illness and even as a result of character - such as perfectionism, a tendency to anger, a tendency to vulnerability and emotionality, and more.
Disruptions in cortisol levels damage nerve and brain cells, learning abilities, memory functions, attention regulation and emotional reactions. ישנו מהלך הורמונלי של תגובה ללחץ שמתחיל בשתי בלוטות במוח: היפותלאמוס והיפופיזה, ומסתיים בבלוטת יותרת הכלייה – האדרנל, שגורם להפרשת הורמון הקורטיזול. הביטוי "עלה לו האדרנלין" – מתייחס למצבי לחץ שעלולים לגרום לתגובות רגשיות קיצוניות כגון כעס וחרדה. פחות ידוע אבל לא פחות משמעותי הוא מושג "עלה לו הקרטיזול" המשפיע על הגוף כתגובה ללחץ בדרך של הגברת עוצמת תגובות שריריות, יכולת תנועה, שיחרור סוכרים לדם, הגברת דופק, זרוז הנשימה ואספקת חמצן, דיכוי תגובות דלקתיות ועוד ועוד. כאשר אדם נמצא במצב של לחץ מתמשך, המוכר בשפה המדוברת כ"סטרס", נוצרים שיבושים ביצור הקורטיזול בבלוטת האדרנל- בשלב הראשון רמות הקורטיזול עולות וכשהמתח לא נפסק, בלוטת האדרנל ומערכות נוספות בגוף נחלשות ועמם גם היכולת לייצב רמות קורטיזול. סטרס יכול להגרם כתוצאה מתקופת מבחנים, מתח חברתי, עומס הספקים ולחצים בעבודה, מטלות מרובות בתיפקוד הביתי, מחלה מתמשכת ואפילו כתוצאה מאופי – כגון פרפקציוניסטיות, נטיה לכעס, נטיה לפגיעות ורגשנות ועוד.
שיבושים ברמות הקורטיזול פוגעים בתאי עצב ומוח, ביכולות הלימוד, בתפקודי הזיכרון, בויסות הקשב ובתגובות רגשיות. הם משבשים יכולת לימוד ומפחיתים שליפת זיכרונות ממנגנון ה"זכרון לטווח ארוך", וגורמים לבלבול. בנוסף, משפיעים גם על מערכות נוספות: פוגעים בכושר החיסון של הגוף ועלולים לגרום לבחילות, הקאות, כאבי בטן, שלשול ועצירות. ג'יגה מכיל צמחים אדפטוגנים, כלומר- צמחים המסייעים להסתגלות והתמודדות מול מצבי לחץ ולווסת הפרשה ותגובה לקורטיזול.
הפרעות זיכרון
לרוב, הבעיה היא בעיקר בפגיעה "בזיכרון לטווח הקצר" (עד יממה). זיכרון זה ממוקם בקליפת המוח הקדמית וממנו מועבר המידע למאגר הזיכרון לטווח הארוך הממוקם ב – 2 האונות הרקתיות של היפוקמפוס. יכולת ממוצעת היא לזכור עד 9 פריטים. הפרעה זו גורמת לקושי ללמוד דברים חדשים, ירידה ביכולת הביטוי ושימוש במילים הנכונות, קשיי התמצאות וניווט. הסיבות להפרעת זכרון הן שונות ומגוונות:

תזונה ואורח חיים לצימצום הופעת הפרעות זיכרון
יש להעדיף צריכה של המזונות הבאים:

חומצות שומן חיוניות מסוג אומגה 3 נמצא גם בשמן דגים, שמן פשתן ושמן צ'יה, ולציטין שנמצא בביצה.

ירקות ופירות המשמשים כנוגדי חמצון כגון שום, בצל, דובדבנים, גזר, ענבים אדומים או צימוקים כהים, רימון.

מזונות המכילים ויטמיני B כגון: דגנים מלאים (אורז מלא,שיבולת שועל, קינואה, גריסים וכד'), קטניות (עדשים, שעועית וכד'), ירקות (ירקות ירוקים עליים, נבטים, ירקות שורש וכד'), פירות (תפוחים, אגסים, פפאיה וכד') ושמרי בירה. ויטמיני B חיוניים לשמירה על בריאות מערכות הגוף בכלל ומערכת העצבים בפרט.

יש להימנע או להפחית צריכה מהמזונות הבאים:

מזונות המכילים שומן רווי- בשר בקר, מזון מעובד, מרגרינה, חמאה, שמנים מזוקקים. שומנים מסוג זה פוגעים בפעילות של חומצות שומן חיוניות מסוג אומגה 3.

מזונות מהירים ומטוגנים אשר מכילים שומנים מזיקים המעלים את רמות הרדיקלים החופשיים ומאיצים התפרצות מחלות כגון אלצהיימר. כמו כן מזונות תעשייתיים, מעובדים ומשוּמרים המכילים צבעי מאכל וחומרי טעם וריח אשר מחלישים את תפקוד מערכות הגוף.

פחמימות פשוטות כגון סוכר, קמח לבן, עוגות ועוגיות. צריכת פחמימות פשוטות גורמת לעלייה וירידה מהירה ברמת הסוכר בדם המביאה לשחרור של הורמונים כגון אדרנלין ונור-אדרנלין אשר ממריצים את מערכת העצבים הסימפטטית וגורמים לחוסר איזון עצבי.

משקאות אלכוהוליים - האלכוהול עלול למנוע ספיגה של ויטמיני B (בעיקר B6, B1, וחומצה פולית) המשמשים לתפקוד תקין של מערכות הגוף בכלל ומערכת העצבים בפרט.
